A Look Back at 2011

0

Now that I finally have had some time to breath, I can finally spend some time to reflect. 2011 was the year I stepped into wedding photography head first.  It has provided a new challenge for me and I enjoyed every minute of it; from sharing beautiful memories with the bride and groom to working with talented photographers.  I’ve learned so much this past year about not only photography but also establishing a style and point of view.  To top it all off, being published in Snap Matter Magazine’s Swimsuit Edition validated the work I have been doing.  With all that has happened in 2011, I am excited to see what 2012 has in store for me and the challenges that lie ahead.

Funny Friday Video

TGIF!  I’ve been sick all week and needed a good laugh.  I’ve been guilty of leaving the lens cap on my camera and trying to shoot but at least I can figure it out after looking through the viewfinder the first time.  This poor guy can’t seem to quite figure out what’s wrong with his Leica after multiple attempts.  Unfortunately for him, it was captured on video.  Happy Friday everyone!

Goodbye 2010, Hello 2011

0

2010 has been a blast and I am looking forward to another full year of shooting in 2011.  I collaborated with a lot of wonderful people this past year which resulted in some great photos.  I can’t stress enough how nice it is to work with others who are just as passionate as I am.  I also want to thank my dedicated fans who have supported me this past year and have provided me the motivation to be the best that I can be.  Now onto my resolutions for 2011.  Firstly, I don’t blog often; usually it’s only to share new content, but I think I need to make a better attempt at blogging more frequently.  Secondly, I need to try new things and am looking forward to adding some studio work into my portfolio this coming year.  I am slowly building my home studio and hope to have all the pieces I need to get started in the next month.  With that, I wish everyone a Happy New Year!

Dark Cloud of Photo Journalism

1

During the Ho Chi Minh city leg of my trip, I visited the War Remnants Museum which depicted the brutality of the Vietnam War.  It was a sobering visit and reminder why war should only be used as a last resort.  What hit a chord with me though was the exhibit about the countless photo journalists that died and what they witnessed during the war.

I believe that these photographers did as much for the world as the soldiers on the ground did.  They were dressed in military fatigues on the front line yet were only armed with their cameras.  They weren’t there to fight a battle, but to tell the story so that no one forgot.  My hat is off to these brave photographers who put their lives on the line so that we can learn from our mistakes.

Who Inspires Me… Peter Lik

4

If I ever had to define my style as a photographer, I would have to say that I enjoy incorporating colors.  Especially colors that really pop and draw your eyes too it.  Peter Lik is my inspiration for my love of color.  I was in Vegas several years ago with my family and we happened to walk into a gallery of Peter Lik’s photos and my jaw just dropped.  The vivid colors and composition just drew my eyes into each photo.  Even to this day when I see a Peter Lik gallery, I make a point to walk in and enjoy his photos.  Though I can’t afford to have one of his photos hang on my wall, he inspires me to see the colors of the world.

On a recent trip to Maui, I found out that one of my favorite shots that Peter took was taken in a bamboo forest I was planning to visit.  Though I don’t come anywhere close to how Peter captures this shot, I was proud to be in the same area where the capture was taken.

You can visit Peter Lik’s website HERE.

Chinese Opera is an art form that dates back to the 3rd century CE. I got the chance to attend a Chinese Opera event in San Francisco and got to check out the behind the scenes as they were getting ready. The troupe performing came from the Red Bean Youth Group who did an excellent job. if you’re interested in learning more about this troupe I’ve provided a link below:

I spent another day shooting during the filming of Curse of the Black Lotus and I am very late sharing these photos with everyone. Better late than never right? My apologies of course.

Curse of the Black Lotus

Last week I was invited to shoot behind the scenes for a friend’s movie titled “Curse of the Black Lotus”. I’ve never been on a film set before so that was a great experience. For more information on this movie please follow the link.

A Day in the Life Of… Catherine M.

What was suppose to be an arts and crafts day turned out to be an impromptu photo shoot that inspired me to create a series called: “A Day in the Life Of…” This really consisted of me following my friend around on a Sunday afternoon and her letting me capture them on a digital negative. Enjoy!
