A Year After London

Mar 22nd

I am really LATE on posting these photos!  How late do you ask?  It’s been almost a year since I visited London and my upcoming trip to South East Asia finally pushed me to post some pictures from my trip to London.  I don’t plan on waiting this long to post pictures from my next trip though.  Well you should all hold me to that at least.  Anyways, onward with the pictures.

Pastries and Android

I had a nice weekend hanging out in Silicon Valley and biking around the Googleplex.  As much as I enjoy doing photo shoots with models, it was nice to just hang out and take random pictures as I was biking around.  Not sure who came up with idea, but I suppose giant pastries go along with a model Android and adult size Nexus One.

UPDATE:  My friend, @ktchow, informed me that each pastry represents a different version of the Android software.  More proof to how you learn something new every day!

On Location in Tahoe

I make enough trips to South Lake Tahoe during the winter that it warranted a photo shoot in the snow.  Luckily for me, there were two models local in the area that were game on to shoot.  They had picked out a perfect spot for us to shoot at  and it had been snowing enough that we had to hike through waist deep snow to get to the spot we wanted to shoot at.

Who Inspires Me… Peter Lik

If I ever had to define my style as a photographer, I would have to say that I enjoy incorporating colors.  Especially colors that really pop and draw your eyes too it.  Peter Lik is my inspiration for my love of color.  I was in Vegas several years ago with my family and we happened to walk into a gallery of Peter Lik’s photos and my jaw just dropped.  The vivid colors and composition just drew my eyes into each photo.  Even to this day when I see a Peter Lik gallery, I make a point to walk in and enjoy his photos.  Though I can’t afford to have one of his photos hang on my wall, he inspires me to see the colors of the world.

On a recent trip to Maui, I found out that one of my favorite shots that Peter took was taken in a bamboo forest I was planning to visit.  Though I don’t come anywhere close to how Peter captures this shot, I was proud to be in the same area where the capture was taken.

You can visit Peter Lik’s website HERE.

Beauty in Black and White

I wanted to change up my shooting style and try taking some black and whites that centered around beauty.  This is the first time I shot a boudoir style shoot before and I wanted to play with as much natural light as I could.  I think these came out great for a first attempt.  Kudos to Stef for letting me use her as a model for this shoot!

I don’t have the most stable hands in the world when shooting and I’m always keeping an eye on my shutter speed to keep it within a range where I can snap a decently sharp picture hand held.  I’ve employed a bunch of camera stabilizing techniques such as holding my elbows close into my body, leaning on a wall or something stable, and shooting after I exhale.

I saw a video by world famous photographer Joe Mcnally that showed his hand holding technique.  Though the technique is geared for left eye focus, it really does good job in stabilizing photos.  I may even switch to left eye focus if I can achieve a better hand held shot.  I’ve posted his video below.

Behind the Scenes with Soonka

It’s always kind of fun to not only look at photos but also see the behind the scenes as well.  I usually try to remember to take a setup shot but getting a picture of me taking a picture is even better.  Usually I’m on my own and I got too many things to worry about to remember to take the setup shot.  Will try harder in the future though.

So you want to see the behind the scenes for this shot?  Scroll down…

Here is the setup for the shot above:

A couple more tidbits from this shoot:

  • This is the 1st time I’ve done an implied shoot
  • This is the 2nd time I’ve shot at this warehouse, first time was with Sadmira

Diptych with Soonka

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted pictures and I have been quite busy for the past couple of weeks so I should have plenty to post soon.  I did a shoot this past weekend with Soonka who was a trooper shooting in a cold warehouse while just getting better from being ill.  I was trying to go for an edgy designer jeans style ad for this shoot with harsher light and an edgy location.

I’ve really enjoyed creating diptych photos lately and have made a bigger effort to ensure I have the shots I want to create a diptych photo.  What is diptych?

A diptych is a photograph that uses two different or identical images side by side to form one single artistic statement.

Expect to see more diptych style photos from me in the future.

I was very excited this morning to find out that the pictures taken for N’Damus back in November made it into the Fashion website Highsnobette!  I feel a great sense of satisfaction knowing that the work that was involved in producing that shoot is being paid off and being published.

I teamed up with an aspiring fashion designer to do a shoot of some of her pieces a couple weekends ago.  I’m always amazed by people that can design clothes from scratch.  I don’t even know how to sew on a button…

We got a great team together for this shoot and it always makes life easier when there are multiple hands and eyes helping to make sure we get the right shot.  It was really cold that morning and much credit is given to the model to be able to compose herself and strike a pose even when every part of her wants to shiver.

If you like to get more info on the fashion designer you can email her at:  sgjdresses@yahoo.com
