I was in Maui last week on vacation for some much needed R&R. I probably could have packed lighter than I did but being the photographer I am, I wanted to be prepared. There were a couple must have shots I really wanted to get and one of them was sunrise on top of Haleakala. The last time I was in Maui, I got to the top and found nothing but dense cold fog obscuring any view of the sun. This trip was so much better as I got a perfect clear view of the horizon from 10,000 feet up. I took the below picture on a long 30 second exposure about 30 minutes from sunrise so I could capture some of the color in the sky.

And no those aren’t stars, those are planets! A park ranger informed me that the most bottom planet is Venus with the one above being Saturn. I couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful sky that morning.
If I ever had to define my style as a photographer, I would have to say that I enjoy incorporating colors. Especially colors that really pop and draw your eyes too it. Peter Lik is my inspiration for my love of color. I was in Vegas several years ago with my family and we happened to walk into a gallery of Peter Lik’s photos and my jaw just dropped. The vivid colors and composition just drew my eyes into each photo. Even to this day when I see a Peter Lik gallery, I make a point to walk in and enjoy his photos. Though I can’t afford to have one of his photos hang on my wall, he inspires me to see the colors of the world.
On a recent trip to Maui, I found out that one of my favorite shots that Peter took was taken in a bamboo forest I was planning to visit. Though I don’t come anywhere close to how Peter captures this shot, I was proud to be in the same area where the capture was taken.
